t_text:
Recipe costing involves the exact cost for preparing a particular menu item. It considers all the ingredients utilized, portion size, and current supplier pricing. To the restaurant owner, this isn't just playing with numbers. It will significantly affect profit.

In most restaurant POS systems, it's typically easy to underestimate costs. Items such as sauces, garnish items, or variations in portions are often neglected. While this may seem insignificant individually, it cumulatively affects profit negatively.

It is not too complicated, really. You put down all the components you use in a meal, set a price on them, and add up all the prices of components for a portion. Then you add this cost to your menu price. So you are aware of what profit margin you have available. For example, if the dish costs 5 to produce and sells at 15, there is definitely something to be gained here.
