t_text:
A security feature of a restaurant POS system is an idle timeout. When a cashier, server, or manager steps away from a POS screen for a specified period without using it, the system will log them out and lock the screen to prevent unauthorized access.

Why Restaurants Use Idle Timeout?

Idle timeout is a key factor in busy restaurants where multiple people have access to the same POS terminal. During rush hour, employees often move very quickly from one table to another, from the kitchen to a payment counter.

If a POS terminal is left with an open session unattended, anyone who comes into contact with it can place orders, alter receipts, and process transactions without anyone’s knowledge or permission. Idle timeout limits these risks by automatically ending a session when inactivity is detected.

Managers will typically set the length of time for the idle timeout within their POS settings, usually between 1 and 5 minutes. After the system has detected that no activities have taken place during this time frame, the POS will lock the screen. To use the POS again, the employee must log in with their Password or Staff ID.
