t_text:
A digital POS: A digital POS is a software-based system to manage sales, stock, and customer database over internet-connected devices, i.e., a tablet, touchscreen, or a handheld device. Traditional "legacy" systems are those that save data locally, i.e., on a local server that would be in the restaurant's basement, whereas a Digital POS is often a cloud-based POS system, and an owner can get business statistics from any corner of the world.

How Does Digital POS Work?

The Digital POS acts as the control center that brings both front of house and kitchen together and works in real-time. Cloud connectivity eradicates the risk of human error through communication, whilst automating day-to-day administrative functions, leaving the staff to do what they do best.

Smart Ordering- Servers use tablets with "forced modifiers" to ensure every order is complete (e.g., asking for steak temperature) before it is sent. Instant Routing- Orders are instantly transmitted to Kitchen Display Systems (KDS) or bar printers, prioritizing items based on preparation time. Live Inventory- The system tracks stock in real-time and can "auto-86" items, automatically removing them from menus when ingredients run out. Integrated Payments- Processes encrypted transactions (Apple Pay, EMV) while simultaneously capturing sales data for performance reporting. Guest Retention- Facilitates digital receipts and loyalty sign-ups, helping restaurants build a database for future marketing and engagement.

Digital POS systems are extremely reliable. Almost all modern versions include “Offline Mode” so they can still process transactions even if there are interruptions in internet connectivity. Once service is restored, all data entered while in Offline Mode will sync with the system.
